How much does a season of junior tennis cost in the Canary Islands?
Licence once a year, up to 50 € per tournament in Spain, 75 % residents' discount on travel and up to 150 € per Tennis Europe event: 2026 costs.
A season of competitive junior tennis in the Canary Islands starts with two payments set by the federations: a licence once a year, which cost 39 € for under-18s in the last published price table, and an entry fee of at most 50 € per tournament in Spain. With six tournaments on your own island, for example, that part comes to no more than 339 €. On top come coaching and equipment, which have no official price; travel off your island, with a 75 % residents' discount on the fare; and, once a player moves up, international events, at up to 150 € per tournament on Tennis Europe and 160 dollars on the ITF junior circuit, paid in euros, dollars or local currency and without the residents' discount outside Spain.
What goes into a season?

| Cost line | What the rules set (2026) |
|---|---|
| Federation licence | One payment per season, set by the Canary Islands Tennis Federation (FCT). Last published table (2024-2025): 39 € for under-18s |
| Tournament entry in Spain | At most 50 € per tournament, all events included |
| Travel between islands and to the mainland | 75 % residents' discount on the fare |
| International events | Tennis Europe: up to 150 € per event (140 € outdoors). ITF Juniors: up to 160 dollars. IPIN (the international player number): 70 dollars a year |
| Coaching | At clubs and academies, no official price. The FCT's development programme (Programa de Tecnificación), for players the federation selects, charges 90 € to 240 € per season depending on age |
| Equipment (rackets, strings, shoes, clothing) | No official price |
What is the least a season can cost without leaving the island?
If a player only enters the island championships and the open tournaments on their own island, the rules set the licence plus an entry fee of at most 50 € per tournament. Using the 2024-2025 table as a reference and six tournaments, the sum is 39 € + 6 × 50 € = 339 € at most. Each extra tournament adds no more than another 50 €. Coaching and equipment come on top and depend on each family.
The Canary Championship can be held on another island. That adds the trip, unless the player gets the FCT's travel aid, which requires showing a lack of means or of an adult to travel with (see below).
What does the licence cost?
It is paid once per season, October to September, and without it you cannot play any federation tournament. On 20 September 2026 the FCT announced that renewals for 2026-2027 were open, without publishing prices: the online form works out the amount from your details. For reference, the last price table the FCT left online, for 2024-2025, charged 39 € for under-18s and 30 € for an under-18's first licence. How to apply and what it covers is on how to get a tennis licence in the Canary Islands.
What does it cost to enter a tournament?
The RFET Technical Regulation (chapter II, sections D.1 and D.2) sets the rules for every official tournament in Spain:
- A 50 € ceiling per tournament, covering every event you play in it.
- Who sets the fee: in RFET and regional federation championships, the federation; in other tournaments, the organiser proposes it and the federation approves it when it authorises the event.
- Qualifying and main draw: if you come through qualifying, you only pay the difference between the two fees.
- When to pay: before the draw or, if the organiser allows it, before your first match. Until you pay, you are not entered.
Not turning up costs money too. For the Canary Championship, the rules say three things: the fee is owed as soon as you are accepted into the draw; a walkover (W.O.), not turning up for your match, in the first round means paying 30 % of the fee, or 20 % if it is justified; and once you are accepted, the fee is not refunded in the event of a walkover. The rules do not say what happens to the difference if you have already paid the full fee: ask the FCT. The rest of the championship's rules are on how junior competition works in the Canary Islands.
What does travel cost?
Living on an island turns every tournament away from it into a trip. Three official rules shape that cost:
- Residents' discount. Anyone registered as living in the Canaries (the padrón) who meets the nationality or residence conditions gets 75 % off air and sea fares, both between islands and between the Canaries and the rest of Spain. It does not cover booking fees or taxes, according to the Government of the Canary Islands. It does not apply outside Spain.
- Travel aid for the Canary Championship. A player who qualifies through their island championship and can show they lack the means, or a family member or guardian to travel with, can go at the expense of the FCT or their island federation. It only applies when travelling with the official team: the player goes without their family, under a federation delegate. In the under-18 (junior) category, the player's flight and accommodation are covered, up to 40 € a night if there is no group hotel. In return, the player agrees to represent their island federation when called, wear its official kit, allow the use of their image and attend its promotional events. Players who get in by wildcard or ranking pay their own way. The full breakdown is on how junior competition works in the Canary Islands.
- Spanish Championships. For the junior individual championships, the FCT pays the travel of players without the means or an adult to go with them, on the same terms. For the Spanish team championships between regions, it pays travel, accommodation and meals for the players it selects.
What do international events cost?
Moving up to the Tennis Europe Junior Tour or the ITF junior circuit adds the IPIN, paid once a year, and higher entry fees. When each step comes is on how a junior player moves up from island to national and international tournaments.
| Item | Maximum in 2026 | Source |
|---|---|---|
| IPIN, junior membership | 70 dollars a year | Tennis Europe rules 2026 |
| Tennis Europe under-14 and under-16, Category 3 without hospitality, outdoors | 65 € (main draw), 60 € (qualifying) | Tennis Europe rules 2026, section 6 |
| Tennis Europe under-14 and under-16, Super Category with free hospitality, outdoors | 140 € (main draw), 100 € (qualifying) | Tennis Europe rules 2026, section 6 |
| Tennis Europe under-14 and under-16, Super Category with free hospitality, indoors | 150 € (main draw), 110 € (qualifying) | Tennis Europe rules 2026, section 6 |
| ITF Juniors J30 and J60 without hospitality, outdoors | 70 dollars (main draw), 55 (qualifying) | ITF Juniors Regulations 2026, article 60 |
| ITF Juniors with full hospitality, indoors | 160 dollars (main draw), 110 (qualifying) | ITF Juniors Regulations 2026, article 60 |
At Tennis Europe events the fee is paid in cash on arrival. An event with hospitality (accommodation provided) charges a higher entry fee but saves the hotel: compare the total, not the fee.
What pushes the total up or down?
- How many tournaments you play off your island. Each one adds fares, accommodation and, in the younger categories, an adult's trip.
- How you get into the championships. Qualifying through your island can open the travel aid, if you show a lack of means or of an adult to travel with; a wildcard or ranking place closes it.
- Whether you play abroad. The IPIN, higher fees and flights without the residents' discount once the event is outside Spain.
- Coaching. The line that varies most between families, because it depends on the hours and on who coaches.
- Qualifying and walkovers. Coming through qualifying only costs the difference. At the Canary Championship, a first-round walkover means paying 30 % of the fee (20 % if justified), and what you paid is not refunded.
Where does help come from?
- The FCT, through the travel aid in its rules and a results-based grant programme (Becas por resultados) for junior players competing in national and international events, running since 1 June 2026 with a maximum budget of 6,000 € for the whole programme.
- On Gran Canaria only, the Cabildo (the island council), which announced in June 2026 that it will pay for the compulsory sports insurance in the licence of federated players under 16 on the island, as reported by the FCT.
- The Government of the Canary Islands and the island councils, with their own yearly calls.
Conditions, deadlines and links for each, and the fees of the development programme, are on grants and support for young tennis players in the Canary Islands.
Questions people ask
Is the entry fee refunded after an injury?
At the Canary Championship, the rules make no refund for a walkover once you are accepted into the draw. If the injury justifies a first-round walkover, the amount owed drops from 30 % to 20 % of the fee. If you have already paid the full fee, the rules do not say whether the difference comes back: ask the FCT. In other tournaments it depends on their own terms.
Does the residents' discount apply to the adults travelling too?
It applies to any resident who meets the conditions, not just the player. The FCT's travel aid, on the other hand, is for the player and does not cover the family.
Does coaching have a fixed price?
Not at clubs and academies: each sets its own. The FCT's development programme, for selected players, does publish fees: 90 € per season for under-10 and under-12, 180 € for under-14 and under-15 and 240 € for under-16 and under-18, plus 100 € a month for an optional weekly session in under-16 and under-18.
